Tomorrow May Be Christmas, But it's Also Sunday Beer Club!

Today, however, is saturday, and we're making up for the lack of remaining Sundays and drinking new beers during the week. The horror, I know.

Today's beer is from a brewery in Belgium called De Ranke. Normally a belgian is a call for me to get more beer than normal, because Deano hates the sweet beers of Belgium and I have to finish them. His teutonic heart beats to the meter of the Reinheitsgebot being orated in High German.

But this beer is Bitter XX, a belgian golden ale. And Dean, as you can expect, loved it. It started out like a typical golden ale and then immediately begins to hop out of that category. And it gets very sharp, very pointed in hops toward the long, lingering, end.

Apologies for my hairdo -- it's Christmas Eve and I'm enjoying myself.

Hot Stuff!

Mikey from Utah Beer on blogspot tempts us with a beer flavored with chilis. Boy, oh boy, Deano is NOT going to like this one.

But I will. Read about it at the link below the image.

Orgies or Beer? You Only Get One

Media_httpcachegawker_lmqhs

When Fred gets too wasted he pisses off Wilma and gets no nooky. Or wait, is it even more insidious than that? Gizmodo reviews "Sex at Dawn" and talks about how agriculture (which basically means beer) is responsible for less sex and more drunkenness -- and war.

Oh well, thank God we have beer still.

A Lager Beer from SLC's Epic

Seriously, dear reader, I sometimes suspect there is something odd about the universe.  Well, I suspect there are a LOT of odd things about the universe, but one of them is that Sunday Beer Club's own Deano has an uncanny ability to pick a shirt that will MATCH our beer label, without ever knowing which beer and which label is involved.  It's just weird and what more can I say?  If you want to see evidence, go to the "See the beers" page and watch the very long slide show.

Today, dean's shirt was matching another beer from Epic Brewing: Pfeifferhorn Lager.  Dean and I both enjoyed this refreshing summery lager with a very nice hop profile, yes we did.  And we lift our glasses in toast to Ivy Gardner, my niece who is headed to Iowa to a University.  Congrats Ivy!

And, since I'm writing this on August 9, I'm also going to mention that it's the anniversary of good ol' Jerry Garcia's death.  Here's to you, too, Jerry.

John John Ale from Rogue

As a confirmed gin-drinker who also drinks beer, our friend Angie (who runs the local liquor store) was excited to tell me about this new beer from Rogue.  It's infused with juniper and is aged in Spruce barrels.  The resulting expensive beer (10 bucks a bottle) was quite interesting, dry and clean tasting, but unfortunately not to my buddy deano's liking.  I liked it well enough and will enjoy the next bottle.

Summer Grifter

I keep trying to wrap my head around the name of this beer — but I guess one name is as good as another — it’s the beer that counts.  And Dean and I quite enjoyed this hoppy “summer” IPA from McTarnahan’s Brewery.

Lots of hop-floral in the nose.  A delicious malty mouthful with orange peel esters and a long hop finish.  And really, here’s a toast to the entire state of Wisconsin, I mean really!

Beer Savers - ReflectionOf.Me

This is quite cool with one problem. I always finish my beer in one sitting.

Don and Dean and the Sunday Beer Club

Every Sunday Don and Dean host the Sunday Beer Club. Our mission? To try a new beer we've never had every Sunday. That's work if you live in Utah, so it's up to us to try and make it happen. Special guests like Jim and Roni, Tina, Melissa, Stephen and Amy also make semi-regular appearances.
